NFC West leader San Francisco will attempt to further separate itself from the rest of the division when it takes the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome this afternoon (1:00pm ET start time, FOX). The total is today’s game is set at 41 points.
San Francisco has not lost since an October 14th meeting with the New York Giants at Candlestick Park, but the closest it has come to defeat since that game came nearly three weeks ago when it played host to the Rams.
St. Louis and San Francisco fought to a 24-24 tie, but most who watched the game would contend the 4-6-1 Rams outplayed the Niners. The Rams out-gained San Francisco 458 yards to 341, but a costly turnover, 13 penalties, and some poor rush defense on the part of St. Louis allowed Jim Harbaugh’s crew to hang around and eventually get the game to overtime.
Despite that tightly contested affair, hardly anyone, at least based upon today’s line, is expecting a close game. That is a reasonable assumption given the Rams play of late (the team has posted a 1-4-1 record in its last six games), but it may not be the correct one.
St. Louis has performed well at home this season with the exception of the Packers and Jets games, and it snapped out of its recent funk with a 31-17 road win last week in Arizona. The Rams have also covered the spread in four of their last five meetings with San Francisco.
San Francisco may be the best team in the league right now, but anything can happen in the NFL, especially in divisional play. St. Louis is not the first betting choice on the board today, but with it getting more than a touchdown at home against a rival, it is a pretty good one.
