The Arizona Cardinals will play on the road for the third time in four weeks tonight when they square off against the Tennessee Titans at LP Field in Nashville. This evening’s game has a scheduled start time of 8:00pm ET; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. The Over/Under in tonight’s nationally televised contest is set at 42 points.

In the off-season there was word that John Skelton could supplant Kevin Kolb as Arizona’s starting quarterback. Kolb responded to the scuttlebutt by saying it was ridiculous and that he had no idea where the rumor started or why it started. Well, he’s probably got a better idea now as to where and why such preposterous gossip originated.

Skelton has been serviceable during the preseason, but Kolb’s first string status is in danger for one reason: he has stunk up the joint. Kolb, who was labeled ‘scared’ by Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, had his best preseason performance yet against Oakland last week, but it is telling when a one’s most promising showing equates to three completions for 22 yards. Kolb’s effort opposite the Raiders brought his exhibition totals to 5-of-15 for 47 yards and one interception.

Skelton will get another chance to one up Kolb tonight as he gets the start for Arizona. Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt has said his first teamers will play into the second half and that Kolb will get another opportunity to play with rest of the offensive starters after the break. Suffice it to say that Skelton can probably lock up the top spot with a decent showing this evening.

Tennessee had its own quarterback competition going into training camp, but the team announced last week that second year pro Jake Locker will step into the starting role. Locker, who showed flashes of brilliance in limited playing time last season, has been pedestrian, at best, this preseason, completing 11-of-24 passes for 101 yards and one interception.

Tonight Locker will take the field for the first time knowing the first string job is his, which might lead to a better performance from the former Washington signal caller.

Game Notes: The Titans are 4-2 straight up but 2-4 against the spread in six preseason games under Head Coach Mike Munchak. The Under is 4-2 in those games. Arizona is 8-15 in preseason play with Ken Whisenhunt on the sidelines.

Free Pick: Take the Cardinals +3 in tonight’s game. Arizona has one more preseason game after this one, but this will be their biggest dress rehearsal for the regular season. Whisenhunt probably has a modest game plan installed and Kolb may actually step up tonight against Tennessee’s second and third stringers as even he must know his job is on the line.
