The Dallas Cowboys are hosting the Detroit Lions tonight on Monday Night Football. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. The NFL Odds for the game have the Cowboys favored by a touchdown to pick up the victory.
Total: 45 points
The Lions playing meaningful games in late December is something the fan base has been striving for, but now the team enters some stressful situations. No matter what happens tonight, the Lions are still going to play Green Bay next Sunday night for the NFC North division title. That might be their only route to the playoffs, but winning here could help them in a potential Wild Card situation.
The defense has been a huge part of Detroit’s success to this point. The Lions have given up just 20.4 points per game this season and held each of the last eight opponents under that number. The availability of Darius Slay, the team’s best corner, could be key in this one, especially if Dez Bryant is officially cleared to go.
Dallas could rest some of its stars in this one as the club will end the regular season with the best record in the NFC. Already at 12-2, the Cowboys are going to finish ahead of everyone for home field advantage. There’s been talk of Tony Romo potentially seeing the field tonight, but head coach Jason Garrett said he doesn’t want to mess with the chemistry to the team and rookie QB Dak Prescott.
Ezekiel Elliot is going to be a problem for the Lions tonight. Detroit’s been decent against the run this season, but Elliot easily leads the league in rushing and has been punishing opposing defenses all year. He’s probably in the MVP discussion and another big game here tonight, especially on national television, could go a long way into helping his candidacy.
Matt Stafford and the Lions have been in every game this season. Last week’s 17-6 loss to New York was the biggest loss of the season and how they respond in this one will be key to any success. Detroit cannot look past the Cowboys for next week’s winner-take-all battle against the Packers. Dallas has not covered in the last four games and Detroit has been in every single one of their games. Stafford and the offense are going to keep them in this one with a potential chance to win.
