The top-seeded Villanova Wildcats open up the post season when they take on the Lafayette Leopards tonight in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The game is scheduled for a 6:50 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on TBS. Currently the College Basketball Betting Odds for the game have the Wildcats favored by a comfortable margin in this one.
Villanova earned the No. 1 seed in the East Region, blowing through the Big East this season and piling up 32 wins. The Wildcats haven’t lost since a Jan. 19 contest at Georgetown, ripping off 15 consecutive victories.
Jay Wright’s team hasn’t made the Final Four since the 2009 season, but they are a popular pick to make it there this tournament. This is only the second time in Villanova’s history they have earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and they certainly don’t want to be the first top seed to fall to a No. 16.
There’s a connection between these two schools as well — Lafayette head coach Fran O’Hanlon averaged better than 13 points in his Villanova career and still holds the school record for assists in a game, 16 against Toledo back in 1970. This is the third time he’s led Lafayette to the tournament, the Leopards have gone one-and-out in the previous two occurrences.
Villanova is favored by better than three touchdowns in this game, and they’ll win the game on the defensive end of the floor. The Wildcats allow opponents to score only 61 points per game, Lafayette surrenders better than 72 points per game. With the Wildcats looking to get out and run, Lafayette is going to be overmatched.
