The Utah Utes take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks today in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The game is scheduled for a 7:27 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on truTV. Currently the College Basketball Betting Odds for the game have Utah listed as a small favorite in this potential upset.
Stephen F. Austin made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, upsetting VCU in the first game but falling to UCLA in the second game. The Lumberjacks are making their third appearance in the Big Dance and are once again looking to break up some brackets by knocking off a higher-ranked seed.
The Lumberjacks won 29 games this season and average just under 80 points per game. They lead the country in assists per game at 17.8 handouts and shoot it at better than 49 percent. This team can really put the pressure on a Utah squad in this one and it could be the perennial 5/12 upset that we’ve come to see in the past.
The Utes have alternated wins and losses since the middle of February and come in having lost four of their last seven games overall.
Both Stephen F. Austin and Utah are pretty solid on the defensive end of the floor and that will be important today. Utah was playing amazing defense in December, but Pac-12 play wasn’t easy on them. Road games were the biggest deterrent to the Utah defense and surrendering points, but they can sure lock it down at times.
Against NCAA Tournament teams this season, Utah this season finished with a record of 3-7 including losing their last four games, all to conference opponents. The Lumberjacks played three tournament teams in their opening four games to the season, losing to Northern Iowa, Xavier and Baylor in three consecutive games
After those defeats, the Lumberjacks finished the season going 28-1. Can they once again find a way to upset a team in March? The offense is impressive and today they will find a way to shoot themselves into the next round.
