NCAA Basketball Picks Virginia Tech Hokies vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Both the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will try to put an end to their respective three-game losing streaks on Sunday night when they meet up at Purcell Pavilion for an ACC clash. The game has a start time of 6:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on ESPN U. Vegas odds have the Fighting Irish listed as 10 point favorites, while the total sits at 137.

Analysis: The Hokies have lost five of six -- all at home -- but they actually won their only previous road game of the season, 61-60 in overtime at Miami on Dec. 8. On the season, Virginia Tech has boasted a modest offensive attack, shooting 43.1% from the field for 70.1 ppg, but in four ACC games those numbers have plummeted all the way to 36.8% shooting and 55.3 ppg. The Hokies have had a different leading scorer in each of their last five games, but the balance hasn't led to success as they've averaged just 58.8 points over that span. Jarell Eddie leads the way with 15.3 ppg, while Adam Smith (11.8 ppg) and Ben Emelogu (11.5 ppg) round out the double digit scorers on this team. The Hokies are 0-20 under coach James Johnson when shooting a lower percentage from the field than their opponent.

Notre Dame's 10-7 overall record seems respectable on the surface but, they come in at just 1-3 in the ACC, as they have gropped 3 straight games to NC State (77-70), Georgia Tech (74-69) and Maryland (74-66), since beating Duke (79-77) in their first ACC game. Notre Dame's has been solid at the offensive end of the floor shootings 46.9% from the field for 77.9 ppg,  while at the other end of the floor they have had some struggles, allowing teams 71.4 ppg. Garrick Sherman (14.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg) has assumed the role of go-to option, shooting 51.8% from the field, while Eric Atkins scores 13.8 ppg and hands out 4.9 apg and Pat Connaughton (13.6 ppg) has drained 43-of-102 (42.2%) from long distance. Notre Dame will induct former head coach Digger Phelps into its Ring of Honor during a ceremony at halftime.

Pick: I like the Under in this one. The Hokies have had a ton of problems scoring of late, putting up just 55.5 ppg once the ACC season has begun. Their 4 ACC games this year have averaged put up no more than 124 points and the UNDER is 2-9 in their last games overall. The Irish defense has had some problems this year, but they do allow just 69.3 ppg at home on 42.5% shooting, so I wouldn't look for the Hokie offense to improve all that much here. On Offense, the Irish as starting to feel the loss of Grant, as they have scored just 68.3 ppg in their last 3 games and the Hokies have played solid defense this year, allowing just 68.1 ppg on 39.1% shooting this year. I just don't see a ton of offense in this one with a couple of struggling offenses on the court.
