NCAA Basketball Picks Villanova Wildcats vs Georgetown Hoyas

College basketball on Monday night and we will see the Villanova Wildcats travel to the Nation's Capital to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. The game has a start time of 9:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Vegas odds have the Wildcats listed as 5.5 point favorites, while the total sits at 140.

Analysis: Villanova comes into the game at 17-2 on the year and 6-1 in the Big East. Their lone loss was a 28 home loss to Creighton, but they bounced back with a road OT win over Marquette on Saturday. Jayvaughn Pinkston's 15.2 ppg leads the team, while James Bell (15.1 ppg), Darrun Hilliard (13.8 ppg) and Ryan Arcidiacona (10.2 ppg) also pour in double digits for a Wildcat team that is 23th in the nation in scoring with 81.3 ppg and 95th in shooting at 45.9%. Defensively the Cats allow 68.1 ppg, while ranking 61st in the nation in defensive FG% allowing teams to hit just 40.5% of their shots. The Wildcats are 2-8 in their last 10 games against Georgetown.

Georgetown started 11-4 and won three of its first four conference matchups before hitting a rough patch with four straight losses. The Hoyas rank ninth in the 10-team Big East in scoring at 71.8 points per game and have shot just 37.1% over their last three games. The Hoyas have been without center Joshua Smith, who hasn't played since Jan. 4 (academically ineligible) and Guard Jabril Trawick, another starter, is out indefinitely with a broken jaw suffered Jan. 8 vs Providence. The Hoya's now have just D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (17.5 ppg) and Markel Starks as their only double digit scorers on the team. Georgetown also isn't a very deep team, ranking ninth in the conference in bench scoring at 16.5 ppg.

Pick:  Going to look to the Under in this one. I know big surprise. Georgetown is having trouble shooting and scoring right now, as they have averaged just 62.5 ppg in their last 5 games (regulation only), while shooting just 37% in their last 3 games. Now the Cats have had some defensive lapses in their last two games, but Jay Wright has been preaching defensive intensity in their practices and I look for them to get back to playing well at that end of the floor. They are 61st in the nation in defensive FG% and should be able to have a good showing vs a weak shooting Georgetown team in this one. The Cats have had no such problems on offense, but they will be taking on a Georgetown team that allows just 61.3 ppg on their home floor. The last 3 meetings have put up no more than 135 points and I don't expect this one to either.
