The Boise State Broncos take on the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game tonight. The game is scheduled for a 10 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have the host Broncos favored by a big margin in this one.
This game is being played on the blue turf in Boise as the Broncos finished as the higher seed in the Mountain West. The weather is expected to be cold, rainy and miserable up in Idaho and that's no problem for the Broncos. They're a heavy favorite in this game for a number of reasons and there's no doubt that they are the better overall team. The Broncos have won 10 games this season, seven of which game in the Mountain West. The Broncos already beat Fresno State this season as well, picking up a 10-point win at home.
Boise comes into this game tonight having won seven straight games overall while Fresno State has won three straight games. The Bulldogs have been very streaky this season — they opened the year with three straight losses, then won three in a row, then lost three in a row again before their most recent streak. QB Brian Burrell is going to have to play well in this one. He's thrown for 21 touchdowns and nearly 2,300 yards on the season. He threw for just 127 yards and one TD and pick against the Broncos earlier this season.
This could be a game that's decided by running backs, though, with two of the best in the Mountain West on display. Fresno's Marteze Waller had better than 1,250 yards on the ground this year with 11 scores while Boise has one of the best tailbacks in all of college football in Jay Ajayi, who has 1,600 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season. Boise QB Grant Hedrick has also played very well this season, accounting for 28 total touchdowns and better than 3,700 yards of total offense. If the Broncos can continue to put up big numbers in this one, it's going to be a rout.
Boise State, dating back to their most recent loss to Air Force on Sept. 27, have out-scored opponents 50-30 in the last seven games. While the 30 points is certainly too many for the Broncos, the 50 points is hard to argue with. Boise State has been scoring on everyone since the loss, with 37 points against — you guessed it — Fresno State being the low mark in this stretch.
Fresno is going to have to play amazing if they are going to hang around in this one. A Boise State win could put them in a pretty decent bowl game and in playing at home, in front of their loyal fans, in the conference championship game, it's hard to see them losing this game. Expect a bigtime effort on both sides of the football with the Broncos scoring a ton of points. It's going to be cold and wet, but Boise State is ready to pick up a big win in this one.
