Analysis: The Los Angeles Dodgers won their last 2 games before the All-Star break but did lose last night's game to fall back into a tie with the San Francisco Giants in the NL West. The Dodgers have been solid on the road this year, going 29-20 away from home, but they are 17-39 in their last 56 games in St Louis. The Dodgers have been a decent offensive team this year, as they come in ranked 12th in scoring (4.14 rpg), 9th in hitting (.257), 23rd in homers (76) and 1st in stolen bases (87). The pitching for the Dodgers has been solid, as they come in ranked 5th in ERA (3.29), 7th in WHIP (1.21) and 3rd in quality starts (62). Getting the ball for the Dodgers today will be Zack Greinke, who is 11-5 with a 2.73 ERA overall, while on the road he is 5-4 with a 2.73 ERA. Zack is 9-3 with a 2.93 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts) vs the Cardinals.
The St Louis Cardinals have now won won 9 of their last 13 games and thanks to the collapse of the Brewers they are just 1 game out in the NL Central race. St Louis is a solid 28-20 at home this year. The Cardinals have been an awful offensive team this year, ranking 29th in scoring (3.74 rpg), 15th in hitting (.252) and 29th in homers (61). The pitching has been what has kept them around, as they are 8th in ERA (3.40) and 8th in WHIP (1.23). Getting the ball for the Cardinals will be Joe Kelly, who is making just his 5th start of the year. So far Joe is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA on the year.
Pick: I will go with the Dodgers in this one. Zack Greinke has had a very nice year and he also has good numbers vs the Cards in his career with a 9-3 record and a 2.93 ERA in 13 appearances ( 11 starts) vs them. The Cards offense has been week all year and it is hard to think that they will get much going vs Greinke in this one. Joe Kelly has spent much of the year on the DL and is making just his 5th start today. He is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA so far on the year. The Cardinals are just 2-3 in his 5 career starts vs the Dodgers and he has a 3.95 ERA in those starts. Typically the Dodgers do not play well in this park, but they still are the better team and unlike last night they have a big edge on the mound. Look for the Dodgers to bounce back today.
