The Subway Series renews tonight as the New York Yankees face the New York Mets in game one of a two game set at Citi Field in Flushing. The Memorial Day contest is scheduled to get underway at 7:10pm ET. The Yankees enter tonight’s game off an 8-3 series finale loss at Tampa Bay; however, they took the series 2-1 and, at 30-19, they remain tied for first in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees, who have won nine of the last 11 games in this rivalry series, will look to continue their domination of the Mets with Phil Hughes on the hill. Hughes is having a difficult season as his 5.51 ERA and 1.50 WHIP would attest and he has been especially bad of late.

The 26 year old right hander, who owns a .302 batting average against, has allowed 18 hits, 15 earned runs, and six free passes in his last three starts (12.1 innings pitched).
The Mets, who snapped a five game skid with last night’s 4-2 come from behind win over the Braves, will give the ball to southpaw Jonathan Niese. Niese’s numbers (4.80 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, .281 batting average against) are similar to Hughes; however, outside of two injury burdened starts, he has been pretty effective. 

Since overcoming the neck issue that plagued him earlier this month, Niese is 1-1 in two starts with a 1.37 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. For his career, Niese is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three appearances against the Yankees.

Notable Trends: The Under is 5-0 in the Mets last five games as a home underdog with a total between 7.5 and 8 runs.  The Under is 5-0 in the Yankees last five games as a road favorite against a left handed pitcher. The Yankees are 7-1 in their last eight games as a road favorite with a money line spread between 100 and 120.
