Two of baseball’s best team, the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers, open a three game set at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington tonight. This evening’s game one clash, which features pitchers Felix Doubront and Derek Holland, is scheduled to get underway at 8:05pm ET. The latest MLB Odds have the Rangers listed as a -140 moneyline favorite ($140 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at nine runs (Over favored at -115 odds).
At 17-11 the Rangers own the best record in the AL West, but they enter tonight’s opener with the Red Sox in a tailspin. Texas has dropped four of its last five games and it is coming off a home series loss to the White Sox.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, they face a Red Sox team that has won eight of its last 10 games and owns the best record (20-8) and run differential (+49) in the major leagues. Texas will also face a pitcher in left hander Felix Doubront that has yet to lose a start this season.
The 25 year old Venezuelan brings a 3-0 record (four starts) in tonight’s game, but his ERA is a modest 4.24 and his WHIP is an unsatisfactory 1.41. He is coming off back to back quality starts where he allowed seven hits, six earned runs, and nine walks while striking out 16 (13.2 innings pitched).
Texas will counter Doubront with its own lefty in
Derek Holland. Holland is 1-2 in five starts with a 3.38 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and .195 batting average against. The Ohio native has been exceptional all season with the exception of one start, an April 22
nd outing against the Angels in which he allowed six hits and six earned runs over 5.2 innings pitched (Texas won the game 7-6).
Texas has won seven of the last nine in this series and Holland is 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five career starts against the Red Sox.
Notable Trends: Boston is 2-8 in its last 10 games as a road dog against a left handed pitcher. The Rangers are 8-2 as a home favorite with a total between 8.5 and 9 runs with Holland on the hill.
