The San Francisco Giants are in the Valley of the Sun tonight to open a three game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks. This evening’s game one battle between the two National League West rivals is scheduled to get underway at 9:40pm ET at Chase Field. MLB Friday Odds at offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have the Diamondbacks listed as a -130 moneyline favorite ($130 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at 8.5 runs (Under favored at -120 odds). The Giants are drawing +120 odds to take tonight’s series opener.
The Giants are 4-2 against the Diamondbacks this season and 6-2 in their last eight meetings with Arizona, but they have some hurdles to clear in order to continue that success this evening.
Staff ace Matt Cain has not been himself this season, despite a decent 4-3 record, 1.21 WHIP, and .234 batting average against. Cain owns an ugly 5.45 ERA and he has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last seven starts.
Despite some of Cain’s struggles, San Francisco excelled with him on the mound in May, posting a 5-0 record in Cain’s five outings last month. That run ended with the calendar changing over to June, though, as St. Louis blasted the Alabama native in an 8-0 win last Saturday. Cain allowed nine hits and seven earned runs over six innings in the loss; however, he did manage to strike out nine Cardinal batters.
The Giants will also have to overcome unbelievable lefty Patrick Corbin. Corbin, who has earned a win in his last seven starts, owns a ridiculous 9-0 record to go along with a 2.06 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Nonetheless, Corbin has looked shaky in his last two appearances, yielding 13 hits and seven earned runs over 12 innings.
Arizona, which is supporting Corbin with an average of 5.4 runs per game, is 11-0 in the New York native’s 11 starts this season.
Notable Trends: The Over is 6-1 in the Giants last seven games as a road dog against a left handed pitcher with a total between 8.5 and 9 runs.
