The league’s worst team, the Miami Marlins, continues its westerly road swing this evening as it opens a four game set with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. Tonight’s series opener between the Marlins and Giants is scheduled to get underway at 10:15pm ET. MLB Free Picks and Odds from 5Dimes have the hosting Giants listed as a -172 moneyline favorite ($172 wins $100); the Marlins are drawing +162 odds ($100 wins $162) to pull off the upset. The Over/Under in this evening’s contest is set at 7.5 runs (Under is favored at -125 odds).
Miami owns a league worst 22-49 record, but, despite just losing two out of three in Arizona, it has played better baseball of late. The Marlins are 6-5 in their last 11 games and that ‘run’ includes two wins over the NL’ best team, the St. Louis Cardinals.
Miami will look to keep its current momentum intact this evening with reliever turned starter Tom Koehler toeing the rubber. Koehler, who is making his eighth start of the season, owns an unimpressive 0-5 record and 5.09 ERA.
The New York native has yielded 21 hits, 17 earned runs, and five walks in his last three outings (16.2 innings pitched) for a 9.44 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. The Marlins are 2-11 in the 13 games in which Koehler has appeared this season.
The Giants, who just completed a home series win over the Padres, will send their own converted reliever to the hill tonight in Chad Gaudin. Gaudin has appeared in 21 games this season (three starts), compiling a 2.83 ERA and 1.20 in 47.2 innings of work.
Gaudin suffered through his worst outing of the season last Saturday as he allowed eight hits and four earned runs over five innings in a 5-6 loss in Atlanta. Gaudin had given just five earned runs in his seven previous appearances (16.2 innings).
The 30 year old right hander has allowed just 11 hits and one run in 14.2 innings of work at AT&T Park this season.
Notable Trends: The Giants are 9-0 in their last nine games as a home favorite with a moneyline spread between 160 and 180 and a total between 7.5 and 8 runs.
Miami Marlins +1.5 (-145), Over 7.5 (+105), +162 (Moneyline)
San Francisco Giants -1.5 (+125), Under 7.5 (-125), -172 (Moneyline)
