Analysis: The Diamondbacks have been within a loss of falling to .500 four times in the last 2 1/2 weeks, but each time pulled off a victory. The Dodgers have seen enough of Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. He is 8-for-13 against Los Angeles in the last three meetings. Arizona is still looking for some clutch hitting from third baseman Martin Prado, however. He has three multi-hit games this month, but one RBI in his last 16 games. He is 1-for-29 with runners in scoring position. Brandon McCarthy lived just a few miles from Dodger Stadium until he was 11 years old and grew up a big fan of former Dodgers hurler Orel Hershiser. He hasn’t won in the six starts since he was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Los Angeles Angels shortstop Erick Aybar last September, when he was with the Oakland Athletics. Prior to that season-ending injury, he had won eight of his previous 10 decisions. One of those victories came against the Dodgers on June 19, when he allowed two hits in seven innings of a 3-0 victory, his only career appearance against Los Angeles.
It's still early, but the injury-riddled Los Angeles Dodgers are sitting at the bottom of the NL West as one of the biggest disappointments in baseball. Despite having the highest payroll in baseball at nearly $221 million, Los Angeles (13-18) is a season-worst five games under .500 after losing five straight - one shy of its season high April 14-20. Injuries are partly to blame. The Dodgers' disabled list includes shortstop Hanley Ramirez, second baseman Mark Ellis and starters Zack Greinke, Ted Lilly, Stephen Fife and Chad Billingsley, who is out for the season following elbow surgery. The injuries to the rotation may be taking a toll since the starters have a 7.66 ERA over the last five games. Chris Capuano turned in the latest dismal effort, surrendering six runs in four innings of Monday's 9-2 loss in the opener of this three-game series with Arizona. The Dodgers hope Beckett (0-4, 5.24 ERA) can end the current losing streak, but he's winless through his first six starts for the first time in his 13-year career. Beckett has been particularly bad over his past three outings, posting a 7.80 ERA while allowing 20 hits and eight walks in 15 innings. He surrendered five runs in a season-low four innings of a 7-3 loss to Colorado on Wednesday. His best performance of the season came at Arizona on April 14, but he allowed a walkoff RBI single to Paul Goldschmidt with one out in the ninth inning to lose 1-0.
Pick: Couple of struggling starters take the mound tonight in LA and that should lead to a high scoring affair. Brandon McCarthy is not right this year and it has showed as he comes in with an 0-4 mark and 7.22 ERA on the year and his starts have averaged 11.5 rpg. On the road he has a 6.30 ERA and 7.5 rpg have been scored in those games. He will be taking on a weak LA offense, but one that is well overdue to break out and this should be the game that they do so. LA averages 3.42 rpg overall, but been slightly better in their last 10 games, putting up 3.9 rpg over that stretch. The Arizona offense has been on a roll as they have averaged 6 rpg and have hit .282 in their last 5 games. On the road they have averaged a solid 4.81 rpg and should be able to tag Josh Beckett for some sold runs in this one. Josh comes in a with a 5.24 ERA on the year and behind him is a weak Dodgers pen that has a 4.67 ERA on the year, including a 5.69 ERA in their last 10 games. The Dodgers have allowed 5.7 rpg as a team in their last 10 games, and those games have gone 7-2-1 to the over, while their home games this year have gone 11-5 to the Over. I expect no less than 10 runs in this one.
