Michigan State Spartans 2013 College Football Predictions and Schedule

College football is just a few hours away and the Michigan State Spartans are looking to improve upon last year's 7-6 record. The 2013 College Football Predictions have the Spartans listed at 135/1 to win the BCS Title game, but they are considered to be one of the potential contenders in the Big Ten Conference.

Mark Dantonio has won 51 games during his six years at the helm of Michigan State. Last year he guided the Spartans to a 6-6 regular season mark, but Michigan State beat TCU in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Defense was the key for the Spartans, who gave up just 16.3 points per game — ninth best in the country. Max Bullough, the leader of that defense, returns for his senior season and he's one of the best linebackers in the country. In the secondary Michigan State brings back three of their four starters, so teams moving the ball down field on them could be a problem.

Yet, Michigan State neutralizes itself on the offensive end of the ball. Dantonio has tabbed senior Andrew Maxwell as the starting quarterback. Maxwell completed just 52.5 percent of his passes last season and that's not going to get it done in the Big Ten. Don't forget they had Le'Veon Bell as well, so it's not like the Spartans didn't have any weapons offensively. There will probably be several guys that get looks at the tailback position. But helping them will be three starters returning on the offensive line.

The Spartans don't play anybody until a September 21 showdown in South Bend against Notre Dame. After that they'll take on Big Ten bottom feeders Iowa, Indiana, Purdue and Illinois in a four-game stretch before hosting Michigan on November 2. That will be the make or break game for the Spartans. They could be 8-0 and probably 6-2 at the absolute worst heading into the state rivalry game. There's no excuse for the Spartans not to go bowling again this year.
