Michigan State surprised last season, earning a spot opposite Wisconsin in the first Big Ten Conference Championship Game by topping Michigan and Nebraska in a tightly contested Legends race. The Spartans, who debuted at No. 13 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls, are not expected to duplicate the feat this season, though. 2012 College Football Predictions have Michigan State listed at +450 odds to retain its Legends crown and the school is favored at -210 odds ($210 wins $100) to win fewer than nine games. 2013 BCS Odds for the Spartans are presently set at +4500 (4100 to win $4500).
Michigan State enters the 2012 season coming off back-to-back 11 win campaigns, but heavy turnover on the offensive side of the ball and a schedule that features ranked foes in Boise State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nebraska has most pundits calling for a step back from the Spartans.
The good news for Mark Dantonio and Michigan State, who lost quarterback Kirk Cousins and top receivers B.J. Cunningham and Keshawn Martin in the off-season, is that odds makers have the school favored in four of those games (Boise State -7, Notre Dame -2.5, Nebraska -5, and Ohio State -2.5).
Should those games go as expected, and the Spartans take care of business against the rest of their opponents (Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota), another double digit season would be realized.
