The Miami Hurricanes were one of the biggest surprises of the college basketball season as no one envisioned them winning the ACC title. The Canes, two seed in the East Region, are no longer flying under the radar on the eve of their opening round game with 15th seeded Pacific. Miami, at +800 NCAA Tournament Odds, is a third pick to win the National Championship behind Louisville (+550) and Indiana (+700). The Hurricanes are also drawing +220 odds to win the East Region and -200 odds to reach the Sweet 16.
Miami’s non-conference slate had at least one high moment as it defeated Michigan State 67-59, but losses to Florida Gulf Coast, Arizona, and Indiana State did not exactly scream ACC title.
The Hurricanes turned things up a notch in league play, though, powering their way to a 13-0 conference start with wins over North Carolina, Duke, and North Carolina State.
Miami faltered a bit late with losses to Wake Forest, Duke, and Georgia Tech, but it hung on to win the ACC regular season crown. The Canes also regained their footing in the conference tournament, scoring wins over Boston College, North Carolina, and NC State to secure the postseason title as well.
Miami’s late surge has turned some skeptics into believers, but the school, which has almost no track record of NCAA Tournament success, will need to win a couple of games in order draw in more converts.
The Hurricanes quest for March glory gets underway on Friday afternoon when they square off against the Pacific Tigers at the Frank Erwin Events Center in Austin, Texas.
