Memorial Day Major League Baseball takes place Monday when the Miami Marlins take on the Washington Nationals. The game is scheduled for a 1:35 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv. Currently the odds for the game have Washington favored to pick up the win.
The Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins are both looking up at the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. Miami sits in second place by themselves in the division with a 26-25 record while Washington sits 3.5 games back with a .500 record at 25-25. Miami has risen up from the depths of the division floor by being the best team in baseball when playing at home — the Marlins have already won 20 games inside their home park this season, two games more than the second best home team in the league, the Atlanta Braves.
The Nats are a bit beat up, playing without Bryce Harper as well. They just lost three out of four to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but picked up a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. In this game today the Nationals will be handing the ball to Tanner Roark, who has a 3.42 ERA on the season with a 3-2 overall record. Roark has won and lost his last two starts, respectively, but pitched well in both games.
Back on April 16, Roark picked up a no decision against the Marlins, tossing 6 1/3 innings and allowing only three earned runs. He struck out just five in that game. In home games this season Roark has been very good, sporting a record of 2-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four starts — allowing just three earned runs in those games.
Miami will be handing the ball to Nathan Eovaldi, a youngster with a 3-2 record and a 3.41 ERA so far this season. Yet, in his career he's gone just 12-23, but he has been on some less than good Marlins squads. In his last start, which came against the Philadelphia Phillies, Eovaldi threw six innings, allowing just one earned run in a victory.
Current Nationals have a .317 career batting average against Eovaldi in 63 plate appearances. In home games Eovaldi has been pretty solid this season, but road games have been a different story. Eovaldi hasn't won on the road yet this season with an ERA of 4.98 in four starts.
Based on Roark's ability to pitch well in home games this season, we like the Nationals to get this done.
