In just a few hours the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes will take place at Belmont Park in New York. The event is scheduled for a start time of 6:52 pm (EST) and will be televised on NBC. There are several Longshots in the event, including Matterhorn, who will start in the 3rd slot and has been installed as 30/1 Odds to win the Belmont Stakes.
Matterhorn's Record: 1-0-1 in 4 Races. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Jockey: Joe Bravo. Sire: Tap It. Dam: Winter Garden. Best Beyer Speed: 90
Matterhorn won by a half-length in his debut in November at Aqueduct Racetrack; since then has finished 10th in an optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, third in allowance at Aqueduct, and fourth in the Grade 2 Peter Pan at Belmont Park. Matterhorn is by 2004 Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Tapit and out of Winter Garden, who won a pair of Grade 3 races; Winter Garden is the dam of Title Contender, a dual Grade 3 winner at Hastings Park.
Todd Pletcher is the Trainer of Matterhorn and he will be trying for his third Belmont Stakes victory and second straight, having won last year with Palace Malice and in 2007 with the filly Rags to Riches. Pletcher’s 16 Belmont starters also include runners-up Bluegrass Cat (2006), Dunkirk (2009) and Stay Thirsty (2011). Pletcher has won 28 NYRA meet titles, including four straight at Saratoga from 2010-2013.
Riding Matterhorn will be Joe Bravo, who is also known as "Jersey Joe". Bravo has ranked consistently among the top 25 jockeys in North America and has long dominated the standings in New Jersey, where he won 13 riding titles at Monmouth Park. A frequent visitor to New York, in 2011 he won the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga with Sean Avery and the Grade 2 Futurity at Belmont Park with Jack’s in the Deck. He has twice competed in the Belmont Stakes, finishing ninth in 1996 with In Contention and 11th in 1998 with Basic Trainee.
