March Madness Elite 8 Kansas Jayhawks vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Odds, Start Time, Free Pick

The Elite 8 will see its final game played on Sunday evening. The second-seeded Kansas Jayhawks will take on the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the second game Sunday evening. The game is scheduled for a 5:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on CBS. Currently the odds have Kansas favored by 1.5 points with the total for the game sitting at 143 points.

Free Analysis: If North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall is 100 percent for this game, I don't think there's any way the Heels aren't favored. In fact, I'm sure they'd be favored by more than one possession as well — probably in the 4.5-6 range. He makes that much of a difference for the club, and it showed on Friday night in the Sweet 16 matchup against Ohio. The Heels are essentially playing with third and fourth string point guards since Dexter Strickland and now Marshall have been cut down. Both teams have eclipsed the 30-win mark this season and it's been nine years since Carolina coach Roy Williams bolted Kansas for the Heels. None of the players who played for him are still at Kansas, no one on the Jayhawks staff has ties to Williams, and coach Bill Self is building his own legacy in Lawrence. However, you know there will still be some emotions going as Williams is taking on his "second favorite" team. Williams coached 15 years at Kansas and won more than 400 games there. Williams took the Jayhawks to the NCAA tournament in all but one of his years as coach and reached the Final Four four times, including back-to-back appearances in 2002 and 2003. Kansas played for the title twice under Williams, falling to Duke in 1991 and Syracuse in 2003. However, getting a win over them without his point guard might be a big task. Marshall, who Williams called "our engine, our driver, the head of the thing," has a broken bone in his right wrist, and resumed basketball activity Saturday for the first time since being injured last Sunday. Carolina is going to have to get great play from their future NBA guys. Harrison Barnes scored five of his 12 points in overtime in a win over Ohio on Friday night while Tyler Zeller finished with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds. The Tar Heels had three players with double-doubles for the first time in an NCAA tournament game as Reggie Bullock had 17 points and 10 boards and John Henson added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carolina has averaged 79 points per game in the tournament while holding opponents to just 65 points per contest. The Heels have been giving up the 3-ball because it's really the only way teams can attack them. There's really no way the teams they have beaten to this point in the tournament could match up with them inside. Kansas, on the other hand, probably can match up with them. The Jayhawks have been averaging just under 63 points in the tournament while holding their opponents to under 56 points per contest. That's not too bad but I really think both teams will eclipse their averages in this game today. Kansas' front line with Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey will be able to match up with Carolina. Withey blocked 10 shots in the last game and Robinson has been a double-double machine all season. Tyshawn Taylor will have to get another good shooting performance in this game and if the Heels end up going with Marshall, Taylor will be able to pressure him all game and cause him problems. If Marshall plays I actually think it will benefit Kansas more, causing some pain for Marshall and keeping him from being anywhere close to 100 percent.

Free Pick: I'll take Kansas, because they are favored for a reason. Carolina was tabbed as the National Champions prior to the season starting but due to the injury to Marshall, I really don't think they can win this game. Kansas isn't the Kansas of old, but they have a good group that plays defense and is a high-efficiency offense. Robinson and Withey up front are going to be able to cause problems with Carolina, who has been dominant all season among less tall and athletic teams. If Marshall plays Taylor and the Kansas backcourt are going to be able to keep pressuring him and continue to make him uncomfortable. It'll be a close game but it should be a game that Kansas takes an edge in and eventually wins.
