Analysis: The San Francisco Giants took game 1 of this series by a 7-4 count. They are now 55-44 on the year, including 27-19 on the road and they are currently tied with the LA Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The Giants have not been all that great on offense, as they come in ranked 21st in the league in scoring 24th in hitting (.245) and 11th in homers (89). The pitching, though, has been solid as they rank 7th in the league in ERA (3.37) and 3rd in WHIP (1.17). Getting the ball for the Giants tonight will be Yusmeiro Petit, who is 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA on the year but most his work this year has been in the pen. Petit is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 21 relief appearances this year, while as a starter he has gone just 1-2 with 5.81 ERA in 5 starts.
The Philadelphia Phillies have had a rough year, as they come into this game at 13 games under .500 and in last place in the NL West. Last night did mark the return of Cliff Lee, but he had a rough outing in the game, allowing 6 ERs in 12 hits in 5.2 innings of work. The Phils offense has not been good at all this year, as they come in ranked 27th in scoring (3.83 rpg), 28th in hitting (.239) and 19th in homers (80). The pitching has also struggled, as they are 21st in the league in ERA (3.98) and 20th in WHIP (1.32). Taking the hill for the Phils tonight will be Roberto Hernandez, who is 4-8 with a 4.22 ERA on the year, while at home he has gone 1-5, despite a 3.07 ERA. Hernandez is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in 2 career starts vs the Giants.
Pick: Gonna look to the Over here. The Phils have not been hitting all that much, but they did put 4 runs on the board last night and are more than capable of doing the same vs Petit, who has a 5.81 ERA as a starter this year. Roberto Hernandez has just a 3.07 ERA at home, but a 5.06 ERA in 2 career starts vs the Giants and San Francisco comes in having averaged 6.2 rpg in their last 5 games. It's hard not to see both teams putting up at least 4 runs each in this one.
