The Chicago Cubs take on the San Francisco Giants today in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 4:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on MLB.tv as well as locally in both markets. The baseball betting odds for the game have the Cubs listed as the favorite to pick up the win at home today.
It's matinee baseball again Friday in Chicago. The Cubs earned a victory in Thursday's game, Kyle Schwarber had a very nice game at the plate with a 3-run homer. Each team now has 59 wins on the season with the Cubs' win last night, which puts Chicago in the second Wild Card slot in the National League.
Today Jon Lester gets the baseball for Chicago. He's been very effective for the Cubs this season, but is just 6-8 with a 3.26 ERA. Lester came over in the off-season to Chicago and has made 21 starts to date, 13 of those coming at Wrigley Field. He's had decent numbers there all year, posting a 3.27 ERA in 82 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .249 average. Day games have been every more impressive for Lester's ERA; he's made eight day game starts and posted a 2.96 ERA during those contests.
Current Giants own an average of .200 against him in 35 at bats. Nori Aoki has four hits in nine plate appearances, having the most success. Buster Posey is the only other player to have more than one base hit against Lester.
The Giants will be throwing veteran righty Ryan Vogelsong. He's 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA and he hasn't picked up a win since July 17 as he's spent a good amount of time coming out of the bullpen for the Giants recently. Vogelsong has thrown just six combined innings his last six appearances, all coming out of the pen and he most recently blew a save at Atlanta earlier this week. San Francisco needs him to have a decent outing and eat up some innings in this game.
Current Cubs are hitting .277 against Vogelsong, Anthony Rizzo has homered twice. Miguel Montero has the most hits with nine in 32 at bats, Starlin Castro has collected five base hits as well.
Lester has been solid during the day this season and his numbers at home are good as well. The Cubs will ride the momentum from yesterday's win and pick up another here over the Giants.
