The Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres meet up today in matinee Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 3:40 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on MLB.tv as well as locally in both markets. Currently the odds for the game have the Padres favored to pick up the win at home in this one.
James Shields gets the ball for the Padres in this afternoon battle with the Reds tonight. San Diego has picked up two straight victories in this series and will go for the sweep in the third and final match, the Padres won a 2-1 game in the opener and an 11-6 game last night.
Cincinnati has waved the white flag on this season and is looking forward to the end. The Reds are 49-62 on the season and are in a race for last place in the National League Central with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds are 15 games under the .500 mark on the road this season, making them one of the worst teams in the league away from home. Winning just three games in the last 10 overall doesn't bode well, either.
Shields is 8-4 on the year with a 3.75 ERA, right around his career average. At home Shields has been very good this year, going 4-1 with a .262 ERA in 11 starts. He's thrown 68 2/3 innings, struck out 81 and allowed opponents to hit just .238 in that time. He hasn't faced the Reds yet this season but current Cincinnati players are hitting .231 against him in 39 plate appearances. Brayan Pena has five hits in 13 at bats, Joey Votto has two hits in three at bats.
The Reds will throw Raisel Iglesias, he's 2-4 with a 4.73 but has lost four of his last five decisions. He's a rookie, like the other four currently in the Reds rotation, and today's start will be the 13th straight by a Cincinnati rookie this season on the mound. At home he's been OK, but on the road it's been a bit of a problem — Iglesias is 0-4 with a 6.20 ERA in 20 1/3 innings, losing all four of the games he has started. Opponents are hitting .289 during that time and to make it even worse, he's allowing a .349 average in day games, holding a 7.20 ERA as well.
Shields should power through the Reds lineup and the Padres will collect some hits.

Vegas betting expert Steve Fezzik doesn’t expect the bad situation in Oakland to get much better this season. This AFC West team may have some improvements in terms of personnel, but Jack Del Rio is the latest in a carousel of ever-changing mediocre coaches, and Fezzik doesn’t expect he is the guy to turn this team around. He also thinks people are overstating Derek Carr’s abilities at quarterback, as he may do well in the fourth quarter, but his numbers are padded with garbage time performance.
