Analysis: The San Diego Padres may have had the biggest offseason on any team this year and they continued it with a big trade for Kimbrel and Upton on the eve of the MLB season. The Padres have been considered by most as a contender in the NL West as they have added plenty of offense to go along with a very stout pitching staff. The Padres have started 0-1 on the year with a 6-3 loss to the Dodgers last night. Getting the ball for the Padres tonight will be Tyson Ross, who went just 13-14 last year, but did it with a nice 2.81 ERA. In his career Tyson is 0-5 with a 2.86 ERA in 8 appearances (6 starts) vs the Dodgers. The Padres are 20-7 in their last 27 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower, but just 1-8 in Ross' last 9 starts vs. the National League West.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are again the favorites to win the NL West, which would be their 3rd straight division title should they win it. The Dodgers have now made it to the post season 6 times since 2004 but have not made it to the World Series over that stretch. Well this year they feel it will finally happen as they have plenty of solid pitching to go along with an improved offensive lineup. They also brought in GM Andrew Friedman from Tampa Bay to help get the Dodgers over the playoff hump. Their time looks to be now and they began their quest yesterday with a nice 6-3 win over these Padres behind Ace Clayton Kershaw. Zack Greinke gets the ball tonight for the Dodgers and he has gone 32-12 with a 2.67 ERA in two years with the Dodgers. Zack is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA in 7 career starts vs the Padres. The Dodgers are 25-6 in Greinke's last 31 home starts and 22-5 in his last 27 starts vs. the National League West.
Pick: Going with the Under here. The Offenses had better than expected results yesterday, but now the game will be played at night when the temps are a bit cooler and that usually means less scoring in LA. Tyson Ross has lost his last 5 starts vs the Dodgers, but he has a 2.53 ERA in those games and those 5 games have averaged just 3.8 rpg with none of them putting up more than 6 runs. Zack Greinke has been as dominant as they come in LA home games as he has a 2.34 ERA in his 29 starts as a Dodger in this park and he also has a 1.77 ERA in 7 career starts vs the Padres. His lone start vs them in this park saw just 3 runs scored and he went 7 innings, allowing just 1 ER in that game. Last night should have really been the pitcher's duel with Kershaw on the mound, but that game was in the afternoon and this one is at night, plus we have two pitchers that have had great successin this series.
