College football on Saturday night and we will see the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs take on the UTEP Miners at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game will be televised on CBSSN and has a start time of 7:30 PM (Eastern). Current Odds have Louisiana Tech listed as 1.5 point favorites, while the total sits at 60.
Analysis: The Bulldogs have had a rough go of it so far this year as they are off to a 1-4 start. Louisiana Tech has dropped three straight decisions, the latest being a 35-16 final against Army in the inaugural Heart of Dallas Classic last Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. Last year this La Tech was nearly unstoppable as they put up 578 ypg and 51 ppg, but with just 3 starters back on that side of the ball and a new head coach they are not even close to last year's numbers, averaging just 378.3 ypg and 16.4 ppg, which ranks 117th in the nation. This offense took a big fall. Defensively they have been improved, allowing 108 ypg land 13 ppg less than they did a year ago. Despite the improved defense it is still the lack of offense that has hurt them the most.
The UTEP Miners are not off to a great start either this year, as they come in 1-3 overall and 0-1 inside Conference USA. Offensively the Miners have been solid this year, averaging 33 ppg and 415 ypg on the year. The offense is led QB Jamiell Sowers, who at one time was in a battle for the QB job at Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel. Sowers has been effective this year, completing 62.3 of his passes for 856 yards, with 7 TD's and just 1 INT. The offense hasn't been the problem for this team. It Has been their defense. The Miners come in ranked a horrible 110th in total defense, 112th vs the run and they allow 38.5 ppg, which is 114th in the nation. Clearly one of the worst defenses in the nation.
Pick: I have been riding unders with La Tech and I will continue to do so here. This Bulldog offense is pathetic and even though they will be going up against a bad defense I just don't see them getting many points from UTEP today. The Miners offense is good, but they will be going up against a solid La Tech defense in this one. Both teams weaknesses on defense are mainly vs the run and both offenses will look to run here which should eat clock. Low 50's at most here.
