The total on this game have come down more than a touchdown since it first opened. The one thing that should immediately be looked at in this bowl game is Houston’s motivation. Head coach Tom Herman bolted town for the prettier girl in state and now the Cougars have been left hanging with a bruised ego.
Major Applewhite is now the go-to guy for the Cougs and he could be looking to make a major (ha) impact in his first game as the man in charge. Houston comes in averaging 5.46 yards per play and nearly 460 yards per game off while scoring 38 points a game.
San Diego State, one of the better teams nobody has paid a lot of attention to this season, won 10 games under Rocky Long and averaged 6.48 yards per play this season. The Aztecs were looking to be in the Group of 5 major bowl game this year but Western Michigan had a better overall season. Their motivation for this game should also be something to consider.
Donnel Pumphrey will be the best player on the field. He’s just 107 yards short of breaking Ron Dayne’s all-time rushing record of 6,397. Houston was pretty stingy defensively this season, but San Diego State always looks to find him a ton of carries.
San Diego State was 9-1 this year when Pumphrey got to 100 yards and they covered the number in six of those games as well.
