We are just a few hours away from the 139th run for the roses. The Kentucky Derby start time and official post time is 6:24 pm ET this Saturday from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. There are several Long Shots in the event, including Falling Sky, who has been installed as 50/1 Odds to win the Derby.
Falling Sky (50-1): Record: 3-0-0 in 4 Races. Trainer: John Terranova. Jockey: Luis Saez. Sire: Lion Heart. Dam: Sea Dragoness.
Falling Sky has been plenty frisky in his gallops at Churchill Downs, a sign the speedy colt could be a major factor in setting the early pace in the Kentucky Derby. Whether he has the stamina to last 1¼ miles is a question to be answered Saturday. Falling Sky has won half of his six career starts, with his three wins coming as a front-runner. He was the leader in the Arkansas Derby turning for home before finishing fourth.
Put simply he has speed, and that may turn out to be a real positive as the new Derby points system has devalued the worthiness of the precocious, sprint-oriented members of the 3-year-old crop. Is already a graded stakes winner over a route of ground as a 3-year-old, and is managed by very sharp connections that are unlikely to only be considering a run due to a case of “Derby Fever.”
He ss very light figure-wise with only a single Beyer over 90 after six lifetime starts, the Derby distance is really pushing it for him, and since his mild upset of some of the lesser lights of the division in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis back in early February, he has proven no match for more highly regarded contenders like Verrazano, Java’s War, and Overanalyze.
This distance isn’t impossible for Falling Sky, but it is worth noting that he tired badly in the stretch of his last two races and the bottom side of the
pedigree is filled with speed-types. He is questionable at 10 furlongs.
