It took Head Coach Bill Synder a couple of seasons to recover from the disastrous Ron Prince era, but he finally returned the program to double digit wins last season with a 10-3 finish. The true goal of a national championship may still be a ways off, though, at least according to the latest 2013 BCS National Championship Odds. Kansas State is a 50-1 play to win the national title this season and a 10-1 selection (Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, and West Virginia are all favored over the Wildcats) to reel in a conference championship trophy in what appears to be a loaded Big 12.
Kansas State went into the 2011 season with the kind of anonymity that a 7-6 team typically enjoys. The quarterback position was a big question mark, outside of Manhattan anyway, as an unproven Collin Klein took over for Carson Kauffman. Klein proved early on to be a capable leader, though, and was responsible, in large part, for the team’s tremendous leap in the Big 12 standings (went from a seventh place finish in 2010 to a second place finish last season).
Synder welcomes Klein and 17 other starters from last year’s Cotton Bowl team back to the Little Apple this season, which has many predicting big things for the Wildcats. Nonetheless, Kansas State’s schedule may make it difficult for the team to duplicate its 2011 results. Road games at Oklahoma, West Virginia, and TCU, along with home meetings against Miami, Oklahoma State, and Texas, could make 10 wins difficult to come by.
