Kansas State was a huge surprise last season, finishing 10-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play to take second place in the Big 12. Despite the Wildcats strong 2011 performance, the odds makers are not sold on the team putting together another 10 plus win season. Kansas State would appear to have a respect issue on its hands, but those familiar with the program are probably used to being dismissed. Those who doubt the Wildcats seem to focus on three key areas, which are: health, close wins, and schedule. There are those who believe quarterback Collin Klein, who is the heart and soul of the team, will have difficulty staying healthy given the number of hits he takes. Some believe last year’s win total was a bit of fool’s gold with Kansas State taking three key games (Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas) by a total of eight points. And finally, the 2012 schedule is a grinder with the Wildcats facing Oklahoma, West Virginia, and TCU on the road while welcoming Oklahoma State and Texas to Manhattan.
Granted, these things could be cause for concern, but if Head Coach Bill Synder has proven anything during his tenure at Kansas State it is this: he is a master at outperforming expectations.
