This year’s most disappointing team, USC, will attempt to salvage at least some measure of respectability when it meets Georgia Tech in the 2012 Hyundai Sun Bowl. The Trojans and Yellow Jackets will clash at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas on Monday, December 31st (2:00pm ET, CBS). USC Trojans vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Hyundai Sun Bowl odds are favoring Lane Kiffin’s troops at -10 against the spread; the game total is currently set at 64 points.
USC opened the season as the nation’s top ranked team, but it proved early on that it was not deserving of the label. It took all of three weeks for the Trojans to lose their first game as Stanford pulled off a 21-14 upset in Palo Alto.
USC rebounded from that loss with four consecutive wins over California, Utah, Washington, and Colorado, but it wilted down the stretch against stiffer competition. The Trojans dropped four of their last five games by an average of 8.3 points per game, resulting in their invitation to the Sun Bowl rather than a previously anticipated spot in a BCS bowl.
Georgia Tech had anything but a banner season as well, but it did find its way to the ACC Championship Game thanks to the poor behavior of Coastal Division rivals North Carolina and Miami. The Yellow Jackets fell below the break even point as a result of their championship appearance, though, losing 21-15 to Florida State to bring their record to 6-7.
Prior to season ending losses to Georgia and FSU, Georgia Tech reeled off three straight wins against Maryland, North Carolina, and Duke.
