Oklahoma State earned a trip to the Fiesta Bowl last season, but it will have to settle for a trip to the Heart of Dallas Bowl this season after losing stars Justin Blackmon and Brandon Weeden. The Cowboys are set to face the Big Ten’s Purdue Boilermakers in the postseason contest, which is scheduled to get underway at 12:00pm ET on Tuesday, January 1st at the Cotton Bowl (ESPNU). Purdue Boilermakers vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys Heart of Dallas Bowl odds are favoring Mike Gundy’s Pokes at -17 against the spread; the game total is set at 70 points.
Oklahoma State entered the season as a bit of an unknown commodity due to the loss of several big name players; however, most felt Gundy had stocked the program with enough talent to stay near the top of the Big 12 standings.
Those sentiments were proven correct, despite an up and down season from the Cowboys, as they placed fourth in the 10 team conference with a 5-4 league record. Some of the shine did come off the Pokes’ star down the stretch, though, as they dropped three of their last five games, including two in a row (Oklahoma, Baylor) to close out the regular season.
Purdue looked no where near procuring a bowl bid after losing five straight games in the heart of its schedule, but three straight wins to close out the regular season evened the team’s record at 6-6.
The Boilermakers, it should be noted, bounced back against three poor team in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana, which partially explains why Oklahoma State, in spite of its poor finish, is laying over two touchdowns in this bowl clash.
