East Carolina will look to keep its Conference USA title hopes alive tomorrow afternoon when it plays host to Marshall. Start time in this divisional clash is set for 2:00pm ET at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium; the game will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network. The Thundering Herd are listed at +225 moneyline odds ($100 wins $225) to hand ECU’s its fifth loss of the season.
East Carolina was a hit and miss squad early in the season, but it has been almost all hit since falling 20-40 at Central Florida on October 4th. The Pirates have won four of their last five games, giving them a 7-4 overall record and 6-1 conference heading into tomorrow’s regular season finale.
ECU’s late success has left it in position to steal Conference USA’s East Division title, but it will need a small miracle in order for that to happen. First, the Pirates have to take care of business against a high powered Marshall team. Second, and far more improbable, they need the 3-8 UAB Blazers to knock off Central Florida on Saturday.
Just the fact that East Carolina has hope, though, should mean a spirited effort against the Thundering Herd. Marshall also has something at stake as well as a win against the Pirates would give it a bowl qualifying sixth win.
The Thundering Herd are 5-6 entering tomorrow’s game thanks to a 38-31 loss at UAB on November 10th. Marshall did rebound last week with a 44-41 win over Houston to put it in position to secure a bowl bid.
Unfortunately for the Herd, its prospects of a win are not that great. Marshall has lost five of the last seven games in this series, including the last three at ECU, and it is 1-9 straight up in its last 10 games as a road dog with a game total of 54.5 or more points. How about a cover, though? Definitely a stronger possibility with the Herd covering the number in its last four games as a road dog with a spread between 4 and 7.5 against a Conference USA opponent.
The best play, however, is the Over. Marshall is averaging 43.8 points per game away from home while East Carolina is averaging 36 points per contest at home.
