Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez Start Time, Odds

The fight between Canelo Alvarez and and Floyd Mayweather takes place this Saturday night (9/14) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and is being billed as one of the biggest fights in history. The start time for the fight is approximately 12:00 AM (Eastern) and will be televised live on pay-per-view. Current odds have Mayweather listed as -240 favorites, while Alvarez is +200 dogs.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will end months of promotional build-up. The fight was initially announced in the spring, shortly after Alvarez had improved to 42-0-1 with a defeat of previously unbeaten Austin Trout and Mayweather scaled to 44-0 after a 12-round clinic against former two-division world champion Robert Guerrero. This fight has the potential to be the biggest moneymaker in boxing history and outdraw the 2007 bout between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya that set a record with 2.5 million Pay-Per-View buys.

Canelo Avarez has never lost in his career (42-0-1), which started at the age of 15, but he will be facing one of the most decorated boxers of all time in Floyd Maywaether, who at age 36 checks in at 44-0 in his storied career. No boxer has been up to the task of defeating Mayweather, but Alvarez may have the best chance of any recent challenger. In his last three fights, Mayweather has never been less than a minus-600 favorite on the day of the bout, but vs Alvarez he has been listed as a favorite of -240.

The arena sold out in an hour for this fight, according to Richard Schaefer. That was 16,500 seats and a record $20 million. Mayweather has been guaranteed $41.5 million, and that's before final pay-per-view numbers. At a Wednesday news conference, Mayweather seemed to take exception to that paltry $41.5 million. "It'll be more like $100 million," said Mayweather. If Mayweather wins, as expected, he will still have four more fights on his plate, as per a contract with Showtime reported to be worth $200 million. If he loses to Alvarez, there is a rematch clause. All indications are that would be another license to print money. There is no rematch clause for Alvarez if he loses.
