The Florida Gators suffered through their worst season since 2004 last year, going 7-6 in Will Muschamp’s head coaching debut. Florida had an especially difficult time hanging with conference big boys, going 0-4 against Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and South Carolina. The odds makers are expecting more from the Gators this season, though, with the latest 2012 College Football Predictions favoring Florida to win Over 8 games (-125 odds or $125 to win $100). However, offshore book maker 5Dimes.eu does expect Muschamp’s crew to come up short in the SEC East race, once again, as they are a third pick, at +305 odds, behind Georgia and South Carolina to win the division. It also seems unrealistic to think the Gators will find themselves contending for a national title at the end of the season. 2013 BCS Odds have Florida listed at 35-1 odds ($100 wins $3500) to win the national championship game.

Florida, after earning national titles in 2006 and 2008, has given the impression over the last two seasons that it was resting on its laurels. The Gators certainly had that sort look in Urban Meyer’s last season on the sidelines and it carried over to 2011 despite Will Muschamp taking over as head coach.

It would be unfair to say the program took a nose dive; it did record 15 wins over the last two years, but it failed to live up to the lofty expectations it created during the heyday of the Meyer years. Perhaps the two year ‘funk’ will provide a wake up call or maybe the 2012 team will just be more talented than its two most recent predecessors.

That remains a distinct possibility with 17 starters and 55 lettermen from last year’s squad returning to the team. The defense, which brings back 10 starters from last year’s unit (20.3 points per game allowed), should give the Gators an opportunity to compete with teams like Georgia, LSU, and South Carolina, especially since they will host the Tigers and Gamecocks this season.
