Tennessee opened around a touchdown favorite in this one, but Utah State is getting a lot of love on the number now. Certainly the return of quarterback Chuckie Keeton has to play a role in that. This will be the first meeting all-time between these schools on the football field and Utah State is looking to pull off a tough win inside SEC country.
The Volunteers have won 19 straight home openers in Knoxville, covering the number in 13 of those games. Tennessee finally believes they have their coach of the future in Butch Jones, but they don't have the program where they want it to be just yet. Last year the Vols won just five games but played one of the toughest schedules in the country with losses to No. 2 Oregon, No. 19 Florida, No. 6 Georgia, No. 1 Alabama, No. 10 Missouri and No. 7 Auburn. That stretch doesn't count their win over No. 11 South Carolina, either. As brutal as the schedule was, Tennessee is wanting to build off last season. They haven't won seven games in a season since the 2007 campaign and this year isn't going to be much better based on the schedule.
Utah State has dropped 16 straight road opening games, but they've found a way to cover the number in five of their last six. They have no problem playing some of the bigger schools in college football and they are coming off a nine-win season a year ago. To win that many games without their best player the last half of the season was remarkable and Utah State believes they can be even better this season.
If Keeton is back close to 100 percent, Tennessee could be in some trouble. The Volunteers should be improved this season, but with the pedigree of Utah State and their willingness to play anybody at this point in the season, we like the mild upset here. Don't be surprised if the Aggies win outright on the field.
