The UNLV Rebels and Houston Cougars meet up in college football action on Saturday night. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on ESPN3. Currently the odds for the game have the Cougars favored by three touchdowns in this one.
Houston is laying multiple touchdowns here against a UNLV team that is coming up short. The Rebels found a way to play in a bowl game last season, but this year it's going to be tough. Tonight they'll take on a Houston team that is only 1-2 on the season but put a scare into BYU last week. Houston, however, only has a victory over Grambling State on the season, so they'll have to improve.
The Cougars have not been able to run the football consistently all season, but they will look to establish that running game tonight. So far this year the Cougars have averaged just 3.4 yards per carry, but the Rebels have been terrible against the run this year, allowing 9.4 yards per attempt to Arizona, 9.0 yards per attempt to Northern Colorado and better than 10 yards per carry to Northern Illinois. UNLV hasn't been able to have their defense get off the field much this season at all, surrendering better than 39 points per game to opponents while only picking up a win over Northern Colorado by a single point, 13-12.
At the first part of the season UNLV was ineligible to play in a bowl game, but that was rescinded by the NCAA and the Rebels were granted the ability to potentially play in another bowl game this season. While it has all been figured out, UNLV is looking at a tough season, beginning tonight. The Rebels should have been ready to go last week against a Northern Illinois team traveling and coming off a big win, but UNLV couldn't win.
Houston's John O'Korn has been good at times and not so good at times. He played well against BYU, but his team fell behind early and couldn't mount the comeback. This Houston team isn't the same it has been in the past, scoring only 26 points per game.
UNLV just isn't strong enough on both sides of the football this year. They're traveling to Houston and in the Rebels first road game of the season they were drilled by Arizona. That doesn't bode well for UNLV tonight as they won't be able to get off the field defensively.
