UNLV was facing NCAA problems earlier this season because of lack of academics, but they were able to get everything worked together. Now the Rebels can play in a bowl game, like they did last season, if they win enough games. Arizona doesn't have those problems, but are also looking to get back to get back to another bowl game. These two teams met on the gridiron last year, but it wasn't really a fair fight. Arizona won 58-13 in that game and held a near-200 yard advantage offensively over the Rebels. They led that game 45-6 at half.
The Wildcats have won 13 straight season openers at home, dating back to the 1987 season, by an average of almost four touchdowns.
In this one tonight, we're looking for the Rebels to put up a fight. They played in their first bowl game in 13 years after a successful 2013 campaign, but they do have to replace some guys.
Anu Solomon will be the first freshman quarterback to start a season opener for Arizona in this game tonight. He's exceeded the coaches' expectations so far this preseason and is ready to go for Rich Rodriguez and the Wildcats tonight. If the Wildcats can run the football closely to what they did last season, it will take a lot of pressure off Solomon tonight. Arizona averaged 5.3 yards per attempt last season and better than 265 yards on the ground per game. UNLV was not good against the run last season, either, allowing opponents to average 216 yards per game in 2013.
The offensive line will also be positive for the Wildcats. They have 104 career starts on that line, but are replacing Ka'Deem Carey in the backfield.
With both teams breaking in new QBs and RBs, the offense could sputter a bit, but the Wildcats and Rebels should still be able to score some points. We think the Rebs can cover the spread, but it's going to be a close one.
