Stanford faces another test this week when they head on the road to UCLA, a team looking for a signature win. The Bruins dropped the season-opener at Texas A&M but rebounded to beat UNLV and BYU in a pair of games leading up to this contest with UCLA.
David Shaw’s team picked up a win last season in this game, 56-35 in a game where the Bruins piled up better than 500 yards. That gives UCLA a bit of a revenge angle in this one and the Bruins could really benefit from picking up a win like this at home.
It’s worth noting the Cardinal have won eight straight in this series. UCLA has an excellent young QB in Josh Rosen, but he’s thrown four interceptions to date (including three against Texas A&M in the lone loss). Rosen has also been sacked seven times this season, but that is going to happen when you throw the ball at least 38 times per game. Rosen needs a big game for the Bruins to have a chance.
On the opposite side, Christian McCaffrey poses many problems for the Bruins. McCaffrey has proven he is one of the better players in the country and last year he rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns and had a 96-yard kickoff return that almost ended in a touchdown.
