Virginia Tech will attempt to halt its fall from grace when it hooks up with ACC Coastal Division rival North Carolina later today (12:30pm ET start time, ESPN3). College Football Saturday odds are favoring the Tar Heels in this rivalry tilt, though, with UNC listed as a -5.5 against the spread. Frank Beamer’s Hokies are a +210 moneyline selection and the Over/Under is set at 50 points.

Virginia Tech has recorded more than three losses just one time since 2004, but it is expected to register its third setback of this season when it meets North Carolina today. The Hokies may, indeed, prevail over the Tar Heels, but it is safe to say they are in rebuild mode after last week’s neutral site loss to Cincinnati.

Virginia Tech, playing as a 6.5 point favorite, gave up 24 first downs and 495 total yards to the Bearcats and it turned the ball over three times to bring its record to 3-2 overall. The game marked the Hokies second outing away from Blacksburg and its second upset playing as a favorite away from home.

North Carolina, a team many feel could contend for the Coastal Division title, is also off to a rough start thanks to road losses at Wake Forest and Louisville. The Tar Heels do carry some momentum into today’s game, though, after recording back to back home wins over East Carolina and Idaho.

If nothing else, UNC has proven that it can take care of business against lesser competition as it has outscored Elon, ECU, and Idaho 155-6. Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, Virginia Tech, despite its struggles, does not qualify as ‘lesser competition’.

The Hokies have been a thorn in North Carolina’s side for several years now, taking seven of the last eight in this series, including the last four in Chapel Hill.

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina College Football Odds:

Virginia Tech Hokies +5.5 (-110), Over 50 (-110), +210 (Moneyline)

North Carolina Tar Heels -5.5 (-110), Under 50 (-110), -250 (Moneyline)
