If the odds makers are correct, today’s meeting (12:00pm ET start time, FX Network) between Kansas and No. 7 Kansas State should be dubbed the Sunflower Massacre rather than the Sunflower Showdown. The latest College Football Saturday Odds have the hosting Wildcats listed as a -25 against the spread favorite and a -2200 moneyline play ($2200 wins $100) to beat the 1-3 Jayhawks. This afternoon’s game total is set at 53.5 points and Kansas is drawing +1300 odds ($100 wins $1300) to win outright.
Kansas State Head Coach Bill Snyder obviously made it a point of emphasis to beat Kansas when he took over the moribund Wildcats program in 1989. The proof: during Snyder’s first tenure at the school (1989 – 2005), Kansas State posted a 13-4 record against the Jayhawks.
When Snyder stepped down after the 2005 season, his successor, Ron Prince, dropped all three of his meetings with KU. Back at the controls in 2009, Snyder wasted no time restoring order as the Wildcats topped the Jayhawks 17-10, 59-7, and 59-21 the last three seasons.
While Kansas should improve under the direction of Charlie Weis, it will take him a while to dig out from under the steaming load of dung Turner Gill heaped on the program. That means the Jayhawks probably have a few more beatings to endure at the hands of the Wildcats.
One of those drubbings will, no doubt, come this afternoon in the Little Apple. Weis and his staff will probably craft a game plan to keep the contest close, and it may succeed for a time; however, as things typically go when these two rivals meet, Kansas State will pour it on in the second half.
The large spread may seem like a lot to cover, but Kansas State’s last 13 wins in this series have come by an average of 35.4 points per game and only two of those wins were by fewer than 25 points.
Kansas vs Kansas State College Football Odds:
Kansas Jayhawks +25 (-115), Over 53.5 (-110), +1300 (Moneyline)
Kansas State Wildcats -25 (-105), Under 53.5 (-110), -2200 (Moneyline)
