Kansas State is in Ames, Iowa this weekend for a meeting with longtime conference rival Iowa State. Start time in tomorrow’s Big 12 clash between the Wildcats and Cyclones is set for 12:00pm ET at Jack Trice Stadium (FX Network). College Football Saturday odds are favoring Kansas State at -7 against the spread while Iowa State is drawing +210 on the moneyline ($100 wins $210). The game total is presently set at 48 points.

Despite its 10-3 finish last season and the return of 14 starters, many felt Kansas State would take a step back this year. The Wildcats won a number of close games last season and detractors seemed to believe that trend would flip in 2012, resulting in a worse finish for Collin Klein and company.

Through five weeks Kansas State has kicked dirt in the face of those prognostications, jumping out to a 5-0 start with conference wins over Oklahoma and Kansas.

The Wildcats schedule is noticeably more difficult going forward, though, and the steady uptick in competition begins with an underrated Iowa State team.

The Cyclones enter this game with a 4-1 record and they are fresh off a 37-23 road win at TCU. Iowa State was outgained 455 to 350 by the Horned Frogs but it forced five turnovers to help it even its conference mark at 1-1.

These two teams play a similar style of football, using a run first approach on offense (which makes them both Big 12 anomalies) while relying turnovers to take opportunities away from their opposition. However, Kansas State has proven to be the better team both in the standings and on the field.

The Wildcats have won the last four in this series (5.8 average margin of victory), but they are 0-2 in their last two trips to Ames, the last of which came in November of 2007.
