An in-state rivalry battle in college football action happens Saturday when the Iowa State Cyclones host the Iowa Hawkeyes. The game is scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Hawkeyes favored to beat their rivals in this contest.
The battle for the CyHawk Trophy, Iowa and Iowa State take to the field in this one with identical 1-0 records. It’s getting national pull by being played on FOX and although Iowa State has been poor in recent seasons, the Cyclones believe this year can be one where they make a statement. The Cyclones have won three of the last four games in this series overall, all four of those games have been decided by six points or less. Under Kirk Ferentz Iowa has won just seven times in the 16 meetings with Iowa State, this year they’re looking to build off a 31-14 victory over Illinois State to open the year. They decided on C.J. Beathard to be the quarterback, he played well enough to get the win. LeShun Daniels Jr. ran for 123 yards as the Iowa offensive line proved to be solid.
The Cyclones beat Northern Iowa 31-7 in a game many people thought they’d lose. Quarterback Sam Richardson threw for 233 yards and a couple of scores. The Cyclone defense proved to be very important as well. They held the Panthers to right around 300 yards of total offense and shut them out in three quarters.
This game should be an exciting one to watch as well. The Cyclones are looking to start 2-0 for the first time since 2012 when they opened with victories over Tulsa and won at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa, 9-6.
Iowa will want to put consistent pressure on Richardson, but Iowa State will find a way to run the ball and alleviate some of that pressure.
