Southern Miss, last year’s Conference USA champion, continues its quest for a win this afternoon when it meets Boise State at Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg (12:00pm ET start time). College Football Saturday odds are anticipating a 0-5 start for the Golden Eagles, though, as Chris Petersen’s Broncos are presently a -10 against the spread road favorite. Southern Miss is a +320 moneyline play ($100 wins $320) to capture its first win of the season and the game total is set at 48 points.
Southern Miss opened the season with a respectable first half showing at Nebraska. At one point the Golden Eagles were tied 14 all with the Huskers but since that time they have been outscored 122-54 en route to an 0-4 start to the year.
Southern Miss is coming off its best performance of the season, though, as it nearly knocked off No. 21 Louisville last weekend in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles were up 17-15 on the Cardinals late in the third, but they surrendered a late touchdown to fall 21-17. Louisville finished the game with just 269 total yards despite holding the ball for over 35 minutes.
Boise State owns a near perfect 3-1 mark, but it has flirted with disaster the last two weeks just nipping BYU 7-6 on the blue turf before slipping past a less than intimidating New Mexico squad 32-29 last Saturday.
The Broncos have been a tremendous road favorite under Petersen’s watch, winning 19 of their last 20 laying points on the road; however, they have slipped some of late as far as the number is concerned.
Boise State covered the number nine out of 10 tries giving points to the home team between November 20, 2009 and October 15, 2011, but it has failed to do so in its last three outing as a road favorite, coming in under spreads of 43, 18, and 24 points against UNLV, San Diego State, and New Mexico, respectively.
