SEC West bottom feeders Auburn and Ole Miss will square off this afternoon as each squad looks to capture its first conference win of the season. Start time in today’s game is scheduled for 12:21pm ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi (SEC Network). No one envisioned an SEC West title for Auburn this season, but few saw the once proud program jumping out to a 1-4 start either. Unfortunately for Tigers’ fans, that is exactly where their school sits through five games.
Auburn, to be sure, played a difficult schedule to this point, squaring off against Clemson, Mississippi State, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, and Arkansas, but one would expect a program that won the BCS National Championship just two seasons ago to find more than one victory in there.
Thus far, despite competitive showings against Clemson and LSU, the Tigers were only able to slip past the Warhawks and even then they required overtime to complete the job.
Auburn’s assignment this afternoon would seemingly be an easier one, but Ole Miss is playing at a much higher level this season than it did during last year’s 2-10 campaign. The Rebels are off to a 3-3 start under new head coach Hugh Freeze, and they were competitive, relatively speaking, in a 33-14 road loss at Alabama before nearly knocking off Texas A&M last weekend (lost 30-27 in Oxford).
Auburn owns the psychological advantage here, having won seven of its last eight overall against Mississippi as well as seven of the last eight in Oxford (6-2 against the spread in those games); however, given the Tigers recent play, the prospects of them continuing their run against Ole Miss appear in grave danger.
