Saturday college football and we will see a Mountain West Conference matchup between the UNLV Rebels and the Nevada Wolf Pack at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nevada. The game has a start time of 6:00 PM (Eastern) and will be televised on ESPN3. Current odds for the game have Nevada listed as 6 point favorites, while the total sits at 68.
Analysis: The UNLV Rebels had their 4 game win streak come to an end last week in their 24 point loss at Fresno state. Considering the team had not won more than two games in any one of the previous three campaigns under head coach Bobby Hauck, the Rebels have to be pleased with their progress. The UNLV offense has been solid this year, putting up 425.3 ypg and 30.6 ppg on the year. The offense is led by Caleb Herring, who has hit 68.3% of his passes for 1259 yards, with 10 Tds and just 1 INT. The Rebels really took off when he took over at QB. The running game is in solid hands with Tim Cornett, who has 706 yards and 9 Tds on the year, while also racking up 3158 yards rushing in his career, which is a new school record. Unfortunately, UNLV has had some serious issues on the defensive side of the ball this season, most specifically by giving up 251.4 ypg on the ground which ranks the squad 119th in the nation, while also allowing 36.3 ppg, which is 108th in the country.
The Nevada Wolf Pack come in at 3-4 on the year, winning all three games at home, while losing all 4 games on the road. Last week they took on Boise State and despite knocking QB Joe Southwick out of the game they still lost 34-17. Cody Fajardo managed to convert 22-of-29 passes for 208 yards, but he failed to get a single pass into the end zone while being sacked six times. Fajardo does have 7 Tds on the year with zero INTs on an offense that has averaged 429.3 ypg and 28.6 ppg on the year. Defense, though, has been a big problem for this team as they have allowed 498.1 ypg, which is 122 in the nation and 37.6 ppg, which is 116th. They are especially bad vs the run, having allowed 287.1 ypc on a whopping 7.1 ypc. Last year, Nevada captured a 42-37 victory in Sin City, pushing the team's win streak over the Rebels to eight in a row and its overall advantage in the all- time series to 23-15.
Pick: I am gonna go with the over in this one. Both teams played lower scoring games than they are used to last week, but this week with two horrible defenses and some very good offenses I see a ton of points being scored here. Nevada scores 37.3 ppg at home, while UNLV has allowed 47.3 ppg on the road this year. The Wolf Pack have allowed just 19.3 ppg at home, but one home game was vs weak scoring Hawaii and another was vs an FCS team. Nevada allowed just 16 total points in the two games. Their other home game was vs a good air force offense and they allowed 42 points in that game. The UNLV offense is a good one and will certainly get their fair share of points in this one. I look for this game to reach the 70's.
