Tuesday night college football and we will see a Sun Belt matchup between the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers take place in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The game will be televised on ESPN U and has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern). Current Odds have Western Kentucky listed as 4 point favorites, while the total sits at 63.
Analysis: Louisiana come in rolling as they have won 3 in a row and have scored a whopping 51 ppg over that stretch. The Offense did start slow this year, but have really turned it on of late. Not only have they put up 51 ppg in their last 3 games, but have also put up 550 ypg and have outgained their last 3 foes by an average of 232 ypg. UL Lafayette is ranked 35th in the nation in total offense and 24th in scoring, putting up 38.8 ppg. They are also pretty balanced on offense, averaging 242 ypg through the air and 217 ypg on the ground. The Offense is lead by Terrance Broadway, who has completed 65.6% of his passes for 1153 yards, with 10 TDs and 4 INTs. Defensively they have struggled some this year, allowing 28.8 ppg, which is 83rd in the nation.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers come in at 4-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 at home. Just like the Ragin Cajuns, the Hilltoppers have been on fire offensively of late as they have averaged 511.7 ypg and 36 ppg over their last 3 games. Brandon Doughty has complete 67.2 % of his passes for 1398 yards, but he does make too many mistakes as he has 10 INTs to just 7 TDs on the year. Still he is leading a WKU offense that is 29th in the nation in total offense (473.7 ypg) and 55th in scoring, putting up 31.2 ppg. They are also pretty balanced, averaging 214.7 ypg on the ground and 259 ypg through the air. Defense is where the Hilltoppers should have a solid edge in this game, as they have allowed just 351 ypg overall (30th) and 23.8 ppg (48th), while ranking 17th in the nation vs the pass, allowing just 183.5 ypg through the air.
Pick: I like the Hilltoppers in this game. Both of these offenses are explosive but the Hilltoppers get a pretty big edge on the defensive side of the ball, where they have allowed just 11.3 ppg in their last 3 games. Now UL Lafayette did put up huge numbers in their last three games (550 ypg & 51 ppg), but Texas State, Akron and Nicholls State aren't teams with very good offenses. Let's also note that UL Lafayette nearly lost to Akron in just a horrible spot for the Zips, who were coming off a near upset of Michigan. Western Kentucky hasn't played great competition in the last 3 week, but they did win by 21 at UL Monroe and they beat Navy at home, holding that very strong offense to just 7 points in the game. WKU has been much more impressive this year than the Ragin Cajuns, they have a big defensive edge and they are at home with revenge from a loss last year. Too many edges for the Hilltoppers here and they should win this one by at least 10 points.
