No. 2 Oregon is on the road today, taking on the ACC's Virginia Cavaliers at Scott Stadium in Charlottsville. Start time in this afternoon's meeting between the Ducks and Cavaliers is set for 3:30pm ET; the game can be seen live on ABC. The latest College Football Picks Week 2 from offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have Oregon listed as a -23.5 against the spread road favorite and the Over/Under set at 61.5 points. Virginia is drawing a +1300 money line ($100 wins $1300) to win its second game of the season.
While Oregon may eventually miss Chip Kelly, it certainly did not miss him last weekend. The Ducks were the same well oiled offensive machine, pounding FCS school Nicholls State 66-3 at Autzen Stadium.
Oregon, which scored three first quarter touchdowns, compiled an eye popping 772 total yards, 500 of which came on the ground on just 45 carries (11.1 yards per carry average).
The Ducks had three players, including quarterback Marcus Mariota and running back D'Anthony Thomas, rush for over 110 yards in the route.
Virginia is no powerhouse, but it will provide a far more greater challenge to Oregon than the Colonels did last Saturday. The Cavaliers were not overly impressive in their season opener, but they did score a nice win over a tough BYU team.
Virginia was out-gained 362 yards to 223 by the Cougars and it averaged a paltry 2.6 yards per carry, but it capitalized on a horrific late mistake from BYU quarterback Taysom Hill to score a come from behind 19-16 victory.
The Cavaliers will need a much more sound showing this afternoon to stay anywhere near Oregon. Virginia benefited greatly from the Cougars offensive struggles, but it will have no such luxury against the Ducks.
Virginia should be an improved team this season given its returning experience, but it will be outclassed today. The Cavaliers suffered their share of big losses a season ago (lost to Georgia Tech, TCU, and North Carolina by 20 or more points) and they are on the verge of absorbing their first ugly setback of the 2013 season.
