College Football Louisville Cardinals at Virginia Cavaliers Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Realistic Expectations for Bobby Petrino's Return to Louisville

The Louisville Cardinals hit the road in college football action Saturday when they take on the Virginia Cavaliers. The game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on ESPN GamePlan. Currently the odds for the game have the Cardinals favored by a touchdown on the road.

The Teddy Bridgewater-less Louisville Cardinals have looked very solid through two games this season. In fact, they only played five days apart, knocking off Miami on Labor Day before beating up on Murray State Saturday. The Cardinals raced to 66 points and looked good doing it. Louisville scored on their final seven first half possessions and led 35-7 at halftime.

For the game Louisville dominated the time of possession, hanging onto the football for better than 42 minutes in the contest. They were 11-for-19 on third down and 4-of-5 on fourth down.

Virginia put a scare into UCLA the first game of the season, narrowly falling to the visiting Bruins 28-20. Virginia turned it over three times and the Bruins scored 21 second-quarter points to survive. They responded well by beating up on Richmond last week, despite just leading 14-3 at the break. The Cavaliers responded well in the second half, posting 31 points. They were out-gained by the Spiders, who threw for more than 360 yards. Louisville, with Bobby Petrino back on the sidelines and looking to score early and often, will try to play as fast as possible in this one.

These teams have met twice prior to this game, but the most recent battle came in 1989. Both home teams won those games.

In this one, the quarterback that plays the best will give his team a chance to win. Cardinal QB Will Gardner has big shoes to fill with Bridgewater in the NFL, but he has played well in two straight games. Virginia QB Greyson Lambert was awful against UCLA, but responded well against Richmond.

The home dog will look for the upset here, but Virginia has a very tough game next week as well when they travel to Provo, Utah to take on BYU. This will be a tough one for them to win, even though they are playing at home. It will be a close contest and Virginia has a chance to win if they don't turn it over.

Free Pick: Louisville 28, Virginia 24
