Clemson has legitimate national title aspirations this season. Auburn? Not so much. The Tigers opened the 2015 season highly-ranked but quickly stumbled to 7-6. Gus Malzahn enters his fourth year at the helm for Auburn with a tough schedule and only 12 starters returning from last year’s squad.
Deshaun Watson leads Clemson, he’s an obviously Heisman contender this season with a chance to showcase himself early in the season here. A big game against an SEC defense, even if it is only Auburn, will give him a nice head start on the competition.
An SEC team at home catching points against a non-conference opponent is certainly rare. Auburn QB Sean White was not good last year, but has won the competition to be the starter for the Tigers in this one tonight. He tossed for just one score last season and four interceptions.
Clemson’s defense will have a lot of new faces on it, they return only four guys and one of them is in the secondary. Auburn might be able to win the battle up front as Clemson is replacing three starters on the defensive line, but Auburn is going to have to play well on defense, too.
Watson has all the tools and the better team at his disposal. Clemson would really benefit from a big win here in SEC country.
