College football week 12 and the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on the UTSA Roadrunners. The game has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on CBSSN. Current Vegas odds have the Roadrunners listed as 7 point favorites, while the total is set at 46.5.
Analysis: Southern Miss comes in on a 3 game losing streak that includes a 63-17 loss at home to Marshall last week. The loss dropped them to 3-7 on the year, but still their 3 wins are more than the 1 year they combined for in the last 2 seasons. The Golden Eagles are just 1-7 ATS after playing Marshall and 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 conference game, but are also 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game. Southern Miss is not a very good offensive team, ranking 95th in total yards, 36th in passing, 120th in rushing and 116th in scoring (19.4 ppg). The defense has also not been that good, ranking 103rd in yards allowed, 94th vs the pass, 105th vs the run and 113th in points allowed (36.8 ppg).
The UTSA Roadrunners came in to this season with high hopes, thanks to fielding the most experienced team in the nation, but it hasn't panned out so good for them, as they come in with a 2-7 record on the year, including a 1-4 record within Conference USA. The Roadrunners are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games in November and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game, but also 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss. UTSA is a very poor offensive squad that ranks 125th in total yards, 114th in passing, 112th in rushing and 124th in scoring (16.9 ppg). The defense has been very decent, ranking 37th in yards allowed, 39th vs the pass, 55th vs the run and 59th in points allowed (25.4 ppg).
Pick: Going to look at the under in this one. The Roadrunners are having major toubles scoring right now and even though they are going up against a bad Southern Miss defense I don’t see that changing here. This team has played some bad defenses this year and yet are still averaging just 16.9 ppg. Even worse is in their last 5 games as they have scored just 10.4 ppg over that stretch, while also averaging just 12 pg at home. Southern Miss’ offense had been doing pretty good earlier in the year, but then Nick Mullens got injured and they have since averaged just 17 ppg and have scored just 17.4 ppg on the road. The UTSA defense is not great but it is very solid and has allowed just 23.5 ppg at home. UTSA home games have averaged just 36 ppg this year and the Under is 6-0 in their last 6 home games, plus 11-3 in their last 14 conference games. 24-17 sounds about right.
